Moon Musings

‘Lunar’ Cufflinks

Danish goldsmith Poul Warmind created the ‘Lunar’ cufflinks around the time of the manned moon landings in the late 60s and early 70s. I’m not sure why I chose to post these particular cufflinks from my collection, perhaps I had space travel in mind after seeing Gravity which was an amazing film and convincing portrayal of 21st century space exploration. The film benefited from the most successful application of 3D I have experienced at the cinema, so realistic it was hard to resist diving under the seat to escape the space debris hurtling towards us.

Gravity recalled the adventure and danger of those early days of space travel, it also highlighted the beauty of planet Earth, radiant against the black velvet of space – how incredible that we inhabit this sapphire blue world, orbiting a fiery star in the vastness of the universe.

Chunky, three-dimensional, bold, pewter cufflinks inspired by the moon landings. Other cufflinks in this series featured footprints on the moon’s surface and rock forms. Although designed by Poul Warmind in the 1960/70s the highly textured, rough cast, brutalist style still appeals.
