Actually a Norwegian leaf, from well known silversmiths David Andersen, (D-A). Originally founded in Oslo in 1876, succeeding generations of the Andersen family developed the company and employed many talented designers, goldsmiths and silversmiths over the years. This lovely example of midcentury design was created by Willie Winnaess during the 1950s. Gold washed sterling silver with white guilloche enamel and a simple ‘C’ clasp.
At this time of year when spring has taken hold yet winter is reluctant to leave, this brooch is very like that first frost-covered spring leaf.
‘Norwegian Wood’, written by John Lennon was released in 1965 and was the first track by The Beatles to feature the sitar played by George Harrison.
The 1987 nostalgic novel by Haruki Murakami ‘Noruwei no Mori’, the Japanese translation of ‘Norwegian Wood’, had many references to the song and featured forest settings and imagery. It was very popular with the youth of Japan and a film adaptation was released in 2010, directed by Tran Anh Hung.
