Fireworks bring in the New Year, perhaps an illustration of the times in which we live. It seems we are experiencing a period of sudden change, a political big bang, where the normal order of things is being torn apart by unseen forces. Witness the battle in the UK to leave a longstanding close relationship with the EU; the divisive presidency of Donald Trump in the USA; the flow of refugees and migrants, escaping war, oppression and hunger, and the repercussions of these events on governments and populations throughout the world. Will the outcome of this chaos be a less democratic or more democratic world order. We are certainly living in interesting times and can only hope that democracy prevails, unfettered by the dark forces of vested interests.
